Hedgehogs might seem like a strange pet to some, but to me they are wonderful.  Their personalities take a bit of getting used to, and if you’re looking for a snuggely little critter hedgehogs aren’t really for you.

I love them because they are so much like me.  They aren’t always the friendliest and they thrive being alone, but occasionally their sweetness will show.  They have spikey defenses, but deep down, underneath those quills is a kind little heart that will give as much love as they are given.

My first hedgehog was Quillson Wilson.  He came into my life in 2003 and was my best friend for two years.  He literally saved my life more times than I can count and I miss him every single day of my life.  He passed from what I believe was Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome (like Multiple Sclerosis in humans) in October of 2005 and I still think about him daily.

Theodore Butters was my four year old hog and he was a trip.  No one but me likes him because he’s a grumpy, huffy little butt who has been known to scare those around him.  Despite his gruff exterior he is quite the sweetheart, if you get know him the right way.  He absolutely loves JD! 

Theodore passed away on January 17, 2010.  He had a stroke and got progressively worse until I knew it was best to put him down.  He went quietly and peacefully.  He will be missed every day.  He was my funny little huffy butt... I know that he’s with Quillson now and that comforts me.

The newest prickly addition to our family is Thaddeus Otto.  He was a rescue I took in when someone decided it would be a good idea to abandon him at a Houston Petsmart.  Awesome huh?  He is much more of a lover than Theodore and is fully of personality.  He’s a stinker, but I love him.
